Universal Cleaner Concentrate: Tugalan Potassium Hydroxide-Based with 0% VOC

What is Tugalan? A highly concentrated alkaline universal cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH (5-liter containers only) with a pH value of 11.0 to 13.5 — the power level in the TUGA product range. The formula is based on potassium hydroxide (caustic potash, CAS 1310-58-3) as the primary alkali, supplemented by non-ionic surfactants (ethoxylated alcohols C9-C11, CAS 68439-46-3) and ethoxylated amines. The VOC content is exactly 0.0 percent. Dilutable from 1:5 (extreme soiling) to 1:30 (light maintenance). Excellent for paints, plastics, tarpaulins, workshop floors, agricultural machinery, and upholstery — strictly unsuitable for unprotected aluminum, zinc, tin, and anodized trim.

Tugalan® is TUGA Chemie's alkaline high-performance concentrate and positions itself as a hybrid APC between a pure industrial degreaser and a detailing all-rounder. Unlike the already highly alkaline Teufels-Reiniger (pH 10.5-11.8), Tugalan operates in the high-alkaline range (pH 11.0-13.5), achieved by the primary alkali potassium hydroxide — an extremely potent proton acceptor that chemically breaks down organic fats and oils into water-soluble soaps through alkaline ester hydrolysis (saponification).

TUGA Chemie from Osnabrück has been manufacturing these formulations in Germany for decades, supplying commercial detailers, workshops, and ambitious private customers in the DACH region.

The surfactant architecture distinguishes Tugalan from simple industrial APCs. Instead of the usual anionic surfactants, TUGA uses ethoxylated alcohols (C9-C11) and ethoxylated amines — both non-ionic, both hard water stable. They have excellent creeping properties, penetrate deep into porous dirt, and reliably emulsify even with hard tap water. Anionic surfactants would form insoluble lime soaps in hard wash water, leaving a gray film on the cleaned surface.

Cleaning takes place in two phases. First, the potassium hydroxide solution chemically breaks down triglycerides (fats and oils) into glycerin and water-soluble fatty acid salts — the non-water-soluble dirt is made water-soluble. Second, the ethoxylated alcohols massively reduce the surface tension of the water; the hydrophobic surfactant tail binds to the remaining hydrocarbons (diesel soot, road oil), and the hydrophilic head turns to the water — micelles form, encapsulating the dirt and keeping it in suspension until rinsing.

• Dilutable from 1:5 to 1:30 — extremely economical. Pure for extreme industrial soiling, 1:5 for heavily greased workshop floors, 1:10 for standard workshop applications, 1:20 for plastic cladding and headliners, 1:30 for light all-purpose applications. A 5-liter container provides 155 liters of application solution when diluted 1:30 — cost per liter of end solution drops to around 25 cents.
• VOC content exactly 0.0 percent. While alcohol-based cleaners often have VOC contents of 5-15 percent, Tugalan is completely VOC-free — no volatile organic compounds. This makes the product suitable for commercial detailing halls without professional ventilation and compliant with stricter EU VOC directives expected for 2030.
• €7 per liter in a 5-liter concentrate — premium price-performance in the DACH market. Direct competitor is Koch-Chemie Green Star (1:30 concentrate, ~€7-9/L). Tugalan is priced at the same level but offers noticeably higher cleaning performance for baked-on lipids due to its potassium hydroxide-based pH value — the trade-off is stricter material incompatibility with aluminum.

Detailing1's practical tip: In our workshop, Tugalan is the product with the highest potential for damage — not because it's bad, but because users underestimate the dilution workflow. Pure application belongs in high-load industrial cleaning: baked-on machine grease residue on workshop steel benches or diesel soot on sewer manholes. On any painted surface or in a detailing context, dilute at least 1:5, standard 1:10 to 1:20. If it dries, the potassium hydroxide residues crystallize as solid lye on the surface — the white, milky spots are irreversible in the clear coat. Maximum exposure time of 3 to 5 minutes, never in the sun, never on hot surfaces. Plus: acid protection glasses (not standard safety glasses!) and acid-resistant nitrile gloves are not a recommendation for Tugalan, but mandatory. Disposal is via AVV waste codes for strongly alkaline lyes — never in household waste or normal wastewater channels.

Dilute concentrate appropriately, spray on, wait 3 to 5 minutes, rinse with high pressure.

The standard workflow begins with correct dilution. Rule of thumb for most common applications: 1:5 for heavily greased engine bay components and workshop steel, 1:10 for heavily soiled plastic panels and workshop floors, 1:20 for standard interior cleaning in professional detailing, 1:30 for light maintenance washing on upholstery and furniture. A 1-liter spray bottle with 200 ml concentrate plus 800 ml distilled water yields a 1:5 mixture — sufficient for approximately 50 square meters of medium industrial cleaning.

The surface must be cool. Never use in direct sunlight, never directly after machine operation on hot workshop components. In direct sunlight, move the car or component to the shade. For workshop floor applications in summer, work early in the morning or late in the evening when the concrete is cool.

Spray the diluted solution evenly from 20 to 30 centimeters away. For vertical surfaces, spray from bottom to top to avoid concentration gradients and streaks. Allow to act for three to five minutes — strictly no longer. For heavily encrusted areas, agitate with a stiff detailing brush or microfiber pad during the dwell time, without extreme pressure.

Then rinse thoroughly without residue or wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. For exterior applications, thoroughly neutralize with clear water or a high-pressure cleaner — potassium hydroxide residues must be completely removed, otherwise long-term corrosion will occur. For interior applications, always use a second, clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth.

In a workshop context, Tugalan is often preparation for metal protection coatings or painting — degreased surfaces bind conversion layers and primers significantly better. Applying wax or sealant without prior degreasing risks adhesion problems.

Paints, plastics, and tarpaulins yes. Aluminum, zinc, and anodized no.

Tugalan is approved for a wide range of substrates. Painted body surfaces (cold!), plastics (ABS, polypropylene, PVC), concrete workshop floor areas, tiled areas, upholstery and furniture (fabric, faux leather, treated genuine leather at 1:30 dilution), truck tarpaulins and covers, agricultural machinery, wooden decks (1:30 dilution plus mandatory clear water rinse), catering stainless steel. The official manufacturer's approval for industrial applications is broad — TUGA explicitly positions the product as a crossover.

Strictly excluded are amphoteric metals that react with both acids and bases. Main categories: unprotected aluminum (even anodized — the anodized layer will be attacked), zinc (galvanizing), tin (solder joints, older bodywork penetrations). On these materials, the high pH value leads to oxidation or direct chemical dissolution — visible as dull or whitish spots.

Clear-coated aluminum rims, however, are harmless as long as the clear coat is intact and the dilution is at least 1:10. Anodized trim on older vehicles without clear coat sealing is critical — for these components, mask them off beforehand or use a pH-neutral cleaner.

Touchscreen displays, genuine leather interiors, and Alcantara are taboo. Even at the highest dilution (1:30), the pH value is too aggressive for genuine leather structures. Use dedicated special cleaners for these materials.

Spring detailing, workshop summer, and industrial use.

The demand for highly alkaline universal concentrates in the DACH market correlates strongly with two main phases. The first peak is in spring detailing between March and May — salt corrosion on chassis and workshop lifts, winter grime in engine compartments, grease deposits on workshop floors. The second peak in early summer (May to July) — insect resin, baked-on dirt after the tour season, preparing sports vehicles for track days or tuning meets.

Workshops and mobile detailers order 50 to 80 percent more in the spring season than in winter — the spring detailing wave is the most economically important peak in the annual cycle. Tugalan is particularly popular with larger detailing operations with three or more employees because its dilution flexibility reduces inventory.

Tugalan is exclusively available in 5-liter canisters — no 1-liter end-consumer format. This is not an oversight, but strategic positioning: the product is intended for professional users with dilution workflows and bulk needs, not for spontaneous individual care in private households. The price of approximately 36 euros per 5-liter canister equates to about 7.20 euros per liter of concentrate — at a 1:10 dilution, this comes to about 65 cents per liter of application solution, a clear efficiency win over RTU competitors like the Teufels-Reiniger in 1-liter containers.

Off-label, Tugalan has established itself as an industrial universal cleaner in the DACH region. Official manufacturer approval is given for upholstery, furniture, synthetic leather, catering stainless steel, wooden decks, workshop floors, and agricultural machinery. In the detailing forum dasdetailingforum.de, Tugalan is regularly referred to as the "secret industry standard" — a workshop floor in a 200-square-meter hall requires about 8 liters of 1:10 diluted Tugalan for complete cleaning, i.e., 800 ml of concentrate from the 5-liter canister.

Safety notice (mandatory): The product is classified according to GHS with H412 (harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). The corrosive potassium hydroxide base absolutely requires personal protective equipment — acid protection glasses, nitrile gloves (acid-resistant), long-sleeved clothing, and closed footwear. In case of skin contact, immediately rinse with clear water for 10 to 15 minutes; in case of eye contact, immediately flush eyes and call emergency medical services. Proper disposal is via AVV waste codes for strongly alkaline lyes. Tugalan is NOT suitable for inexperienced private users — anyone who does not regularly work with highly alkaline lyes should consistently opt for the ready-to-use Teufels-Reiniger.
