pH-neutral wheel cleaner gel with active indicator for all rims

Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green) is the acid-free wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie with a pH value of 7-8 and a chemical reaction indicator. The thixotropic gel adheres vertically to rims, and the active ingredient sodium thioglycolate dissolves iron particles from baked-on brake dust through chelation. The color change from green to red-violet visually indicates when the reaction is complete. Approved for all wheel types — aluminum, chrome, anodized, polished, powder-coated.

Spray onto the cold, dry rim – working from bottom to top, never pre-rinse. After 3 to 5 minutes of dwell time, as soon as the gel turns reddish-purple, rinse thoroughly with a sharp high-pressure water jet. For baked-on brake dust, perform a second application instead of extended dwell time. Never use on hot rims or in direct sunlight. Store frost-free, shelf life 24 months after opening.

Acid-free car wheel cleaner: Alu-Teufel Spezial Green with colour indicator (GTÜ test winner)

What is Alu-Teufel Spezial? An acid-free wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH with a thixotropic gel formula and a chemical colour indicator. The pH sits between 7.0 and 8.0 — skin-neutral and cleared for every common wheel type: aluminium, chrome, anodised, diamond-cut and powder-coated. The active ingredient sodium thioglycolate (CAS 367-51-1) reduces baked-on iron(III) oxides from brake dust to water-soluble iron-thioglycolate complexes. That exact reaction shifts the gel from a clear greenish tone to red-violet — so you can see when the cleaning is done. Not suited to tar-type grime or bitumen.

Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green) is the pH-neutral wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie and a benchmark product in the German-speaking detailing market — in the Auto-Bild tests run by the GTÜ in 2016 and 2019 it consistently took shared second place with a "highly recommended" rating, beaten only by the premium heavyweight Dr. Wack P21S High End. The formula is built on sodium thioglycolate as the chemically active reducing agent, a surfactant matrix of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (anionic) and Capryl Glucoside (a non-ionic sugar surfactant), plus Xanthan Gum as a natural thickener.

TUGA Chemie, based in Osnabrück, has been making these formulas in Germany for decades and supplies professional detailers, workshops and serious private customers across the German-speaking market.

The xanthan makes the gel pseudoplastic — a property of non-Newtonian fluids where viscosity drops under shear stress and snaps back the moment things go still. As you spray it, the gel thins out and atomises into a fine mist; the second it hits the vertical wheel face, the viscosity returns and the gel clings in place. Contact time on the surface climbs massively, with no product running off too early.

The actual cleaning runs in four phases: adhesion through the gel, wetting and creep under the oily grime by the surfactants, chemical reduction of the iron(III) oxides from brake dust by the sodium thioglycolate, and finally the colour shift — complex formation changes the light-absorption spectrum and the gel turns red-violet. Rinse before the colour changes and you've taken the cleaner off too early.

  • Acid-free and cleared for every wheel type. The pH of 7.0 to 8.0 keeps the cleaner gentle on anodised aluminium, chrome, diamond-cut wheels, powder-coated steel and alloy wheels, and ceramic-coated rims. Even TPMS sensors (tyre-pressure monitoring) are left untouched — a point where acid-based rivals fail again and again. The "red" Alu-Teufel from the TUGA range is the acid-based emergency cleaner for extremely baked-on brake dust on uncoated wheels; the "green" one here is the weekly care option.
  • The colour indicator shows the reaction in real time. The clear greenish gel turns deep red to violet the moment the sodium thioglycolate reacts with the iron particles in the brake dust. You don't need a stopwatch — the colour tells you when the reaction is finished. With normal grime that takes three to five minutes; on more heavily caked wheels, longer.
  • 6.60 EUR per litre in the 5 L canister — and in the question "which wheel cleaner is the best?" it lands consistently in the top 3 across German-language search results. In the large container, Alu-Teufel Spezial is the value-for-money winner in the German-speaking market. SONAX FelgenBeast runs about 9 to 15 EUR/L, the market leader Dr. Wack P21S High End 20 to 24 EUR/L, Koch-Chemie Magic Wheel Cleaner about 46 EUR/L, GYEON Q²M Iron WheelCleaner about 36 EUR/L and Soft99 Iron Terminator about 79 EUR/L. According to the GTÜ test, Alu-Teufel Spezial cleans on par with SONAX and only just behind the pricier P21S — a clear efficiency win for every euro you put in.

Alu-Teufel Spezial Green hero

Detailing1's tip from the shop: What we see day-to-day is that the biggest efficiency jump with Alu-Teufel Spezial doesn't come from the chemistry itself, but from the spray bottle. The original TUGA spray head atomises in spots rather than a flat fan — so people compensate by massively over-spraying, 100 ml and more per wheel instead of the ideal 30 to 50 ml. The pro trick: decant the gel into a Kwazar Mercury Super Pro+ or IK Multi TR 1 — both have acid- and base-resistant Viton or EPDM seals and atomise the thixotropic gel much finer. Consumption drops by about 40 percent with better cleaning. Plus the standard rule: the wheel has to be cold (at least 30 minutes after driving), never in the sun, strictly 5 minutes dwell time — go over that and the actives burn through the clear coat in concentrated form.

Cold wheel, spray from the bottom up, 3 to 5 minutes dwell, high pressure.

The standard workflow starts with the temperature check. Wheels and brakes have to be cooled to ambient temperature — in direct sun, move the car into the shade first or do the wheels in the morning or evening hours.

Before you lay the cleaner down, give the wheel a rough pre-rinse with clean water or the pressure washer — loose road grime and brake-dust crumbs come off this way and the gel works more efficiently. Spray the Alu-Teufel Spezial on evenly from a distance of 20 to 30 centimetres, bottom to top. That direction matters: work top to bottom and you create a concentration gradient and run marks that can stay visible once they dry.

Dwell time is three to five minutes, until the red-violet colour indicator shows across the whole face. On heavily soiled or long-neglected wheels you can agitate with a soft detailing brush or a dedicated wheel brush — circular motions, no pressure, the gel spreads more evenly and the surfactant can emulsify the last layers of dirt.

Then rinse off with a sharp high-pressure jet until there's absolutely no residue left: first bottom to top (loosens the lower wheel edge), then with clean water top to bottom (flushes all residue safely down). Don't forget the back of the wheel and the gaps between the spokes — that's where most of the brake dust collects.

After the rinse the wheel should look clean. With baked-on brake dust a second pass with a longer dwell time may be needed — but never beyond the maximum dwell of 5 minutes in one go. If you can't get the wheel clean in one pass, run two passes with a high-pressure rinse in between rather than letting it dwell longer once.

Alu-Teufel Spezial Green in use

The gel cuts through brake dust. Tar and bitumen, no.

The chemical speciality of Alu-Teufel Spezial is iron-based grime. Sodium thioglycolate is a reducing agent that reacts specifically with iron(III) ions — baked-on brake dust from sintered particles, flash rust on wheel edges, oxidised metal swarf from tyre wear. That's the core competence and the reason for the colour-indicator shift.

What the cleaner doesn't touch: tar, bitumen, fresh rubber residue on the wheel lip or oily grime from leaking brake cylinders. For tar and bitumen, a dedicated tar and adhesive remover is the right call. The Alu-Teufel can partly emulsify here mechanically, but that's not the formula's strength and just burns through product.

An important limit is the maximum dwell of 3 to 5 minutes. Push well past that window and the water content of the gel evaporates. The concentration of the surfactants and the sodium thioglycolate then spikes locally in the remaining drops, which can cause irreparable chemical etching of the clear coat — visible as matt, milky spots that no follow-up care can undo. The GTÜ explicitly warns against leaving cleaning fluids to sit on paint or wheels under thermal load.

In the professional detailing world, Alu-Teufel Spezial is often used "off-label" as a large-area flash-rust remover on car paint — the reducing action of the sodium thioglycolate also works on iron particles embedded in clear-coat layers. TUGA Chemie doesn't officially include this use case, but in day-to-day detailing it's an established method. If you go that route, wear strict PPE (nitrile gloves, eye protection) and keep the dwell-time limits even more conservative — on paint the tolerance is lower than on tough wheel clear coats.

Alu-Teufel Spezial Green result

Tyre-change season, active-ingredient maths and the 5 L argument.

Demand for quality wheel cleaners in the German-speaking market follows an extremely cyclical pattern, tied directly to the "Easter-to-October" rule of thumb: summer tyres from Easter to October, winter tyres from October to Easter. Google Trends data over the last 5 years for "Felgenreiniger" shows a measurable rising wave: the current 8-week average of index 75 sits about 47 percent above the 12-month mean of 51 — the sharpest seasonal peak in April, a factor of 3 over the low point in January. Before every wheel change — so March/April and September/October — demand for wheel cleaners explodes, because workshops and private owners want the wheels properly clean before storage. Carry baked-on brake dust into the garage over the summer and after six months of storage you bring back grime that's twice as hard to shift.

In winter itself, consumption is high because of road-salt corrosion and grit spray on the inner faces of the wheels. In summer it's down to harder braking at higher temperatures and more motorway miles. The seasonal peaks are clear: mid-March, mid-September, plus the run-up to big tuning events like Tuning World Bodensee or the Essen Motor Show, where the wheels need to be presented flawless.

The 1-litre spray bottle at about 13 euros is the easy entry point for one or two cars in a private household. With weekly wheel cleaning and a consumption of about 80 to 120 ml per full clean (four wheels plus inner faces), one litre lasts about eight to twelve cleaning cycles — a quarter's supply in everyday use.

The 5-litre canister at about 33 euros saves roughly half per litre and is the right size for workshops, small to mid-sized detailers and households with three or more cars. Run a mobile detailing service cleaning ten to fifteen cars a week and the 5 L canister keeps you going for two to three months. The pump head on the 1-litre bottle unscrews and moves onto a separate empty bottle — the established fix, because the 5 L canister itself isn't built for spraying.

Safety note for professional use: the product falls under GHS07 with the hazard statements H302 (harmful if swallowed), H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction) and EUH208 (contains methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone — may produce an allergic reaction). VOC content is about 30 g/L (roughly 3 percent). With several uses a day in enclosed detailing halls, ventilation is a must — doors wide open or extraction running — and nitrile gloves make sense even for private use, especially with sensitive skin.

Frequently Asked Questions about Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green)

What is Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green) and what is it used for?

TUGA Alu-Teufel Spezial is an acid-free rim cleaner with a pH-neutral gel base (pH 7-8) and an optical active ingredient indicator. The color change from green to red-violet shows in real time where brake dust is located. Suitable for all rim types, including polished and matte surfaces.

How do I use Alu-Teufel Spezial correctly?

Spray onto the cold, dry rim from bottom to top – never pre-rinse. After 3-5 minutes of reaction time, as soon as the reddish discoloration is complete, rinse off thoroughly with a strong high-pressure water jet. For heavily soiled rims, agitate with a rim brush.

What is the difference between Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green) and Aluminium-Teufel (Red)?

The green Alu-Teufel Spezial is acid-free (pH 7-8) and approved for all rim types – the weekly care cleaner. The red Aluminium-Teufel is acidic (pH below 1) and only for extremely baked-on brake dust on rims with intact clear coat sealant – the emergency cleaner.

Is Alu-Teufel Spezial suitable for all rim types?

Yes, due to its pH neutrality, it is approved for all common rim types: painted or anodized aluminum, diamond-cut rims, powder-coated steel rims, ceramic-sealed wheels. TPMS sensors (tire pressure monitoring system) also remain unaffected – an advantage over acidic competitors.

What happens if Alu-Teufel is left on for too long?

After 5 minutes, the gel dries – then dry marks are possible and the rim must be re-rinsed. In direct sunlight or at temperatures above 25 °C, the usable reaction time is reduced to 2 minutes. A second application is more effective than waiting longer, as the active ingredients can cause concentrated etching.

How economical is Alu-Teufel Spezial?

A 1-L container is sufficient for approximately eight to twelve complete rim cleanings (four rims plus insides, ~80 ml per application). For heavily soiled rims, consumption increases to up to 50 ml per wheel. In the 5-L canister, the price per liter drops to around €6.60. Shelf life of 24 months after opening, store frost-free.

Application of Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green)

Four Phases for Clean Rims Without Clear Coat Damage

Before each application, allow the rim and brake system to cool to ambient temperature — after a highway drive, wait at least 30 to 45 minutes. In direct sunlight, move the car into the shade, otherwise the water evaporates too quickly and the gel crystallizes on the clear coat.

Roughly pre-rinse the rim with a clear high-pressure water jet — this removes loose road dirt and brake dust crumbs, allowing the gel to work undisturbed. Then briefly dry the surface with compressed air or a dry microfiber cloth so that the gel is not diluted by residual water.

Spray the Alu-Teufel evenly from 20 to 30 centimeters away, from bottom to top. This direction prevents concentration gradients and streaks. Let it work for three to five minutes until the transparent to greenish gel has turned completely reddish-violet — the visual indicator shows the completed reaction.

For heavily soiled rims, agitate in a circular motion with the TUGA Rim Brush or the Detailing Rim Brush. Then rinse thoroughly with a sharp high-pressure water jet until no residue remains — first from bottom to top, then with clear water from top to bottom.

Notes: Strictly not for baked-on brake dust after months of neglect — for this, the acidic Aluminium-Teufel Rot is the right tool, but only for rims with intact clear coat seals. Maximum application time strictly 5 minutes — if exceeded, the active ingredients will crystallize and corrode the clear coat. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius, usable for 24 months after opening. When using the 5-liter canister, transfer to a separate spray bottle — the canister is not suitable for spraying.
