What is Alu-Teufel Spezial? An acid-free wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH with a thixotropic gel formula and chemical active indicator. The pH value is between 7.0 and 8.0 — pH-skin neutral and approved for all common rim types: aluminum, chrome, anodized, polished, powder-coated. The primary active ingredient sodium thioglycolate (CAS 367-51-1) reduces baked-on iron(III) oxides from brake dust to water-soluble iron thioglycolate complexes. This chemical reaction is precisely what changes the gel's color from transparent-greenish to reddish-purple — the user visually sees when cleaning is complete. Not suitable for tar-like soiling or bitumen.

Alu-Teufel Spezial (Green) is TUGA Chemie's pH-neutral wheel cleaner and a reference product in the DACH detailing market — in the GTÜ's Auto-Bild tests in 2016 and 2019, it consistently placed a shared second with the rating "highly recommended," only being surpassed by the premium heavyweight Dr. Wack P21S High End. The formulation is based on sodium thioglycolate as a chemically active reducing agent, a surfactant matrix of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (anionic) and Capryl Glucoside (non-ionic sugar surfactant), and xanthan gum as a natural thickener.

TUGA Chemie from Osnabrück has been manufacturing these formulations in Germany for decades, supplying commercial detailers, workshops, and ambitious private customers in the DACH region.

The xanthan makes the gel pseudoplastic — a property of non-Newtonian fluids where viscosity decreases under shear stress and immediately increases again at rest. When sprayed, the gel becomes thin and atomizes finely; upon hitting the vertical wheel surface, the viscosity returns, and the gel adheres statically. The contact time on the surface increases significantly without the product running off prematurely.

The actual cleaning mechanism proceeds in four phases: adhesion by the gel, wetting and penetration of lipophilic dirt by the surfactants, chemical reduction of iron(III) oxides from brake dust by sodium thioglycolate, and finally, chromophoric shift — the complex formation changes the light absorption spectrum, and the gel turns reddish-purple. If the color change is not awaited, the cleaner has been rinsed off too soon.

• Acid-free and approved for all wheel types. The pH value of 7.0 to 8.0 makes the cleaner gentle on materials such as anodized aluminum, chrome, polished wheels, powder-coated steel and alloy wheels, and ceramic-coated wheels. TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors also remain unaffected — a point where acidic competitors regularly fail. The "red" Aluminum-Teufel from the TUGA range is the acidic emergency cleaner for extremely baked-on brake dust on uncoated rims, while the "Green" here is the weekly maintenance variant.
• Active indicator shows reaction in real-time. The transparent-greenish gel turns deep reddish to violet as soon as the sodium thioglycolate reacts with the iron particles in the brake dust. The user doesn't need to work with a stopwatch — the color indicates when the reaction is complete. For normal soiling, this takes three to five minutes; for more heavily soiled wheels, it takes correspondingly longer.

According to GTÜ tests, the cleaning performance of Alu-Teufel Spezial is on par with SONAX and only slightly below the more expensive P21S — a clear efficiency win per euro invested.

Practical Tip from Detailing1: In our workshop, we see the biggest efficiency leap with Alu-Teufel Spezial not from the chemistry itself, but from the spray bottle. The original TUGA spray head atomizes pointwise instead of broadly — users compensate by massively overspraying, using 100 ml or more per wheel instead of the ideal 30 to 50 ml. The professional trick: Transfer the gel into a Kwazar Mercury Super Pro+ or IK Multi TR 1 — both have acid and base-resistant Viton or EPDM seals and atomize the thixotropic gel much finer. Consumption drops by about 40 percent with better cleaning performance. Plus the standard rule: the rim must be cold (at least 30 minutes after driving), never in the sun, strictly 5 minutes reaction time — exceeding this will cause the active ingredients to concentrate and etch the clear coat.

The standard workflow begins with a temperature check. Wheels and brakes must have cooled down to ambient temperature — if exposed to direct sunlight, move the car to the shade beforehand or clean the wheels in the morning or evening hours.

Before applying the cleaner, pre-rinse the wheel with clear water or a high-pressure cleaner to remove loose road dirt and brake dust particles, making the gel work more efficiently. Spray Alu-Teufel Spezial evenly from 20 to 30 centimeters away, from bottom to top. This direction is important: working from top to bottom creates concentration gradients and streaks that can remain visible after drying.

The reaction time is three to five minutes, until the reddish-purple active indicator is fully developed across the surface. For heavily soiled or long-neglected wheels, a soft detailing brush or a special wheel brush can be used to agitate — circular movements, no pressure, to spread the gel more evenly and allow the surfactant to emulsify the last layers of dirt.

Then rinse thoroughly with a sharp high-pressure water jet, leaving absolutely no residue: first from bottom to top (loosens the lower wheel edge), then with clear water from top to bottom (flushes all residues safely into the wheel well). Don't forget the back of the wheels and between the spokes — this is where most of the brake dust accumulates.

After rinsing, the wheel should be visually clean. For baked-on brake dust, a second application with extended dwell time may be necessary — but never exceed the maximum dwell time of 5 minutes in one go. If the wheel doesn't come clean in one pass, perform two applications with high-pressure rinsing in between, rather than letting it sit longer once.

Brake dust dissolves the gel. Tar and bitumen do not.

The chemical specialization of Alu-Teufel Spezial lies in iron-containing contaminants. Sodium thioglycolate is a reducing agent that specifically reacts with iron(III) ions — baked-on brake dust from sintered particles, flash rust on wheel edges, oxidized metal shavings from tire abrasion. This is its core competency and the reason for the active indicator's color change.

What the cleaner does not dissolve: tar, bitumen, fresh tire rubber residue on the wheel lip, or oily contaminants from leaking brake cylinders. For tar and bitumen, a dedicated tar and adhesive remover is the right choice. Alu-Teufel can mechanically emulsify some of these, but this is not the strength of the formulation and leads to unnecessary product consumption.

An important limitation is the maximum dwell time of 3 to 5 minutes. If this timeframe is significantly exceeded, the water content of the gel evaporates. The concentration of surfactants and sodium thioglycolate in the remaining drops increases extremely locally, which can lead to irreparable chemical etching of the clear coat — visible as matte, milky spots that cannot be undone by any subsequent care. The GTÜ explicitly warns against leaving cleaning liquids on paints or rims under thermal stress.

In the professional detailing sector, Alu-Teufel Spezial is often used "off-label" as a large-area rust remover on car paints — the reducing effect of sodium thioglycolate also works on embedded iron particles in clear coat layers. TUGA Chemie does not officially include this application, but it is an established method in detailing practice. Anyone doing so should wear strict PPE (nitrile gloves, eye protection) and adhere even more conservatively to dwell time limits — on paint, the tolerance is lower than on resistant wheel clear coats.

Wheel change season, active ingredient math, and the 5-L argument.

The demand for high-quality wheel cleaners in the DACH market follows an extremely cyclical pattern, directly linked to the "O-to-O" rule of thumb: summer tires from Easter to October, winter tires from October to Easter. Google Trends data from the last 5 years for "wheel cleaner" shows a measurable rising wave: The current 8-week average of index 75 is about 47 percent above the 12-month average of 51 — the most pronounced seasonal peak in April with a factor of 3 compared to the low point in January. Before each wheel change — meaning March/April and September/October — demand for wheel cleaners explodes, as workshops and private users want to thoroughly clean their wheels before storage. Anyone who stores baked-on brake dust over the summer will face a twice-as-difficult cleaning task after six months of storage.

In winter, consumption is high due to road salt corrosion and grit splashes on the inner surfaces of the wheels. In summer, it's due to more aggressive braking at higher temperatures and more highway kilometers. The seasonal peaks are clear: mid-March, mid-September, plus preparation for major tuning events like Tuning World Bodensee or Essen Motor Show, where wheels are to be presented flawlessly.

The 1-liter spray bottle, costing around 13 euros, is a convenient entry point for one to two vehicles in a private household. With weekly wheel cleaning and a consumption of around 80 to 120 ml per complete cleaning (four wheels plus inner surfaces), one liter lasts for about eight to twelve cleaning cycles — a quarterly supply for everyday use.

The 5-liter canister, costing around 33 euros, saves about half the cost per liter and is the right size for workshops, small to medium-sized detailers, and households with three or more vehicles. Anyone operating a mobile detailing service and cleaning ten to fifteen vehicles per week will be supplied for two to three months with the 5-L canister. The pump head of the 1-liter bottle can be unscrewed and transferred to a separate empty bottle — the established solution, as the original 5-L canister itself is not suitable for spraying.

Safety note for professional use: The product falls under GHS07 with hazard statements H302 (harmful if swallowed), H317 (may cause allergic skin reaction), and EUH208 (contains methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone — may produce an allergic reaction). The VOC content is around 30 g/L (about 3 percent). For multiple applications per day in enclosed detailing halls, ventilation is mandatory — doors wide open or extraction active — and nitrile gloves are also advisable for private use, especially for sensitive skin.

Four Phases for Clean Rims Without Clear Coat Damage

Before each application, allow the rim and brake system to cool to ambient temperature — after a highway drive, wait at least 30 to 45 minutes. In direct sunlight, move the car into the shade, otherwise the water evaporates too quickly and the gel crystallizes on the clear coat.

Roughly pre-rinse the rim with a clear high-pressure water jet — this removes loose road dirt and brake dust crumbs, allowing the gel to work undisturbed. Then briefly dry the surface with compressed air or a dry microfiber cloth so that the gel is not diluted by residual water.

Spray the Alu-Teufel evenly from 20 to 30 centimeters away, from bottom to top. This direction prevents concentration gradients and streaks. Let it work for three to five minutes until the transparent to greenish gel has turned completely reddish-violet — the visual indicator shows the completed reaction.

For heavily soiled rims, agitate in a circular motion with the TUGA Rim Brush or the Detailing Rim Brush. Then rinse thoroughly with a sharp high-pressure water jet until no residue remains — first from bottom to top, then with clear water from top to bottom.

Notes: Strictly not for baked-on brake dust after months of neglect — for this, the acidic Aluminium-Teufel Rot is the right tool, but only for rims with intact clear coat seals. Maximum application time strictly 5 minutes — if exceeded, the active ingredients will crystallize and corrode the clear coat. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius, usable for 24 months after opening. When using the 5-liter canister, transfer to a separate spray bottle — the canister is not suitable for spraying.
