Chemically dissolve brake dust with Alu-Teufel Spezial without attacking your rims
What is Alu-Teufel Spezial? A pH-neutral rim cleaner with gel formula and optical active indicator from TUGA Chemie that chemically dissolves brake dust, rust film, and metal particles on all common rim types. Not suitable for baked-on brake dust after months of neglect or tar and bitumen contamination.
Alu-Teufel Spezial is a rim cleaner gel from TUGA Chemie that works with the active ingredient sodium thioglycolate: The gel binds iron(III) compounds in brake dust and chemically dissolves them from the rim surface — without attacking the rim itself. This is visible by the color change from green to reddish-violet as soon as the gel reacts with iron particles. TUGA Chemie has been producing Alu-Teufel in Osnabrück since the 1970s and has since further developed the formula to today's gel consistency.
In addition to the main active ingredient sodium thioglycolate, the gel also contains phosphonates and non-ionic surfactants that emulsify organic dirt such as oil and rubber residues from brake pads. While the thioglycolate chemically attacks the iron compounds, the surfactants dissolve the rest. This combination makes a separate pre-cleaner unnecessary for normal contamination. The product is biodegradable according to German detergent law and contains no acids or alkalis in the classical sense — the pH value of 5.8–6.3 is in the skin-neutral range.
- Color change shows you where brake dust is. The gel changes from green to reddish-violet within 60–90 seconds as soon as it dissolves iron particles. You see in real-time which areas are reacting and which are already clean. This prevents two common mistakes: rinsing too early on heavily soiled areas and unnecessary reworking on areas that are already clean.
- One cleaner for all rim types. pH value 5.8–6.3, i.e., in the skin-neutral range. Polished aluminum, painted aluminum, steel, chrome, multi-part rims — none of these surfaces are attacked. This saves you separate cleaners and the risk of using the wrong one on the wrong rim. Only restriction: For matte or anodized rims, test on a hidden area first.
- Gel adheres where liquid runs off. The gel consistency adheres to vertical spokes instead of immediately running into the rim well. This gives you an even exposure time over the entire rim. Approximately 50 ml per wheel is sufficient for a complete cleaning — which results in about 20 complete sets of rims for the 1-liter bottle, and over 100 for the 5-liter canister.
Practical tip from Detailing1: Always spray onto the cold, dry rim — do not pre-rinse. Water dilutes the gel by 30–50 percent and the color change will be uneven. At temperatures above 25 °C, let the rim cool briefly in the shade, otherwise the gel will dry before it has reacted. The result: stubborn residues that you then have to remove mechanically. Spray from bottom to top so that runoff marks do not run over already cleaned areas.
Cold rim. 3 minutes. Rinse.
Within 3–5 minutes of exposure time, the gel completely dissolves regular brake dust from the rim surface. Spray on, wait for color change, rinse with a strong jet of water — that's the complete process.
Spray the gel evenly onto the cold, dry rim. Include spokes, rim well, and wheel bolts, working from bottom to top. Within 60–90 seconds, the color change begins: reddish-violet streaks show you where iron particles are dissolving. The full exposure time is 3 minutes, maximum 5. No longer — sodium thioglycolate is saturated after about 5 minutes.
For the gaps in multi-part spokes, a rim brush is recommended to spread the gel into hard-to-reach areas. Not for scrubbing, just for working it in. Afterwards, rinse with high pressure or a strong jet of water from top to bottom.
A common misconception: Longer exposure time does not lead to more cleaning power. The active ingredient reacts completely within the first 3–5 minutes. If you want to help with heavy brake dust, a second pass is better. If you clean every two weeks, one pass is almost always enough. If you only clean every 4–6 weeks, you should expect two passes.
Important for the spray head: The 1-liter bottle has a standard trigger that becomes stiffer at low temperatures below 5 °C. Warm the bottle briefly in your hand beforehand. When decanting into the 5-liter container, spray via an empty bottle with a foam head — the gel foams slightly and adheres even better to the rim. In midsummer, however, never work in direct sunlight. From 30 °C ambient temperature, the gel on a sun-exposed rim has less than 90 seconds before it dries.
Brake dust dissolves the gel. Tar does not.
The gel reliably dissolves regular brake dust from standard brake pads — that's its core area. The active indicator not only shows you where dirt is, but also what kind: Iron particles react reddish-violet, organic contaminants such as tar or oil show no discoloration.
As a secondary application, the gel also works as a rust film remover on paint. After parking next to railway tracks or under industrial exhaust, fine iron particles accumulate on the paint surface, which feel like rough spots. Spray on, wait for color change, rinse — this works just as safely on clear coat as on rims. Rust film is one of the underestimated paint damages: If it remains on the paint for more than 2–3 weeks, the iron eats into the clear coat and leaves craters that only polishing can remove.
Where the gel reaches its limits: Baked-on brake dust after 6+ months without cleaning sits deep in the pores of the rim surface. Here, the pH-neutral gel does not have enough chemical power. In this case, the acidic Aluminum-Teufel Rot is the stronger choice — but only on painted rims, not on polished aluminum or chrome. Tar and bitumen stains do not react at all with sodium thioglycolate. For that, you need a solvent-based tar remover.
As a rule of thumb: If you are looking for a gentle all-rounder for regular care, this gel remains the right choice. If you need maximum chemical power and accept the material limitations of an acid cleaner, reach for Aluminum-Teufel Rot.
The difference is chemically simple: Alu-Teufel Spezial works at pH 5.8–6.3 and only attacks iron compounds. Aluminum-Teufel Rot works in the acidic range and also dissolves mineral crusts that have worked their way into the rim over months. The price for this power: On unprotected aluminum rims, acid can leave irreversible stains.
Test winner for regular rim care
In the AUTO ZEITUNG rim cleaner test, the gel achieved 91 out of 100 points and the grade "Very good". It is the right choice for anyone who cleans their rims every 1–4 weeks and doesn't want to worry about material compatibility.
The product performs particularly well in everyday use with multiple vehicles or in fleets, where various rim types are to be covered with one cleaner. You grab the bottle, spray, rinse. No thinking about whether your rims are polished or painted, no risk for chrome rims, no fear of stains on the paint.
This simplicity is the real advantage over stronger, but more limited, acid cleaners. The gel is less suitable if you are primarily battling extreme brake dust from racing brake systems or only clean your rims every few months. In both cases, you need more chemical power than a pH-neutral cleaner can provide.
The yield is approximately 50 ml per set of rims. For the 1-liter bottle at €12.99, that comes to €0.65 per cleaning process for all four wheels. The 5-liter container reduces the price per application to under €0.45. With bi-weekly cleaning, the 5-liter canister lasts over a year.

Step-by-step for a clean result
Spray directly onto the cold, dry rim — work from the bottom up to prevent run-off streaks from drying prematurely. Do not rinse beforehand, otherwise the water will dilute the gel by 30–50 percent and the color change will be uneven.
The color change begins within 60–90 seconds. The full reaction time is 3 minutes, maximum 5. A second application is always more effective than an extended reaction time. Approximately 50 ml per wheel — for the 1-liter bottle, this is enough for 20 sets of rims.
For the spaces between multi-part spokes, use the Detailing Wheel Brush — not for scrubbing, but for distributing and touching up. Then rinse from top to bottom with a strong jet of water or a high-pressure cleaner.
Notes: The Alu-Teufel Spezial reliably removes regular brake dust, but not baked-on brake dust after months of neglect — for that, the acid-based Aluminium-Teufel Rot is the right product, but only on painted rims. At temperatures above 25 °C, never work in direct sunlight, otherwise the gel will dry before it reacts. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 °C, lasts 24 months after opening.
