What is the Koch-Chemie Panel Preparation Spray PPS? A ready-to-use, alcohol-based degreaser and inspection spray for automotive paint — it strips oil, wax and polish residue clean off and reveals the holograms and scratches that polishing oils were hiding.
Lay down a ceramic sealant, a wax or a polymer coating without degreasing the paint first, and you're gambling with how long it lasts — the protection bonds to residue, not to the clearcoat itself. That's exactly where the Koch-Chemie Panel Preparation Spray "Pps" comes in: a ready-to-use, alcohol-based degreaser that gets paint dialled in right after polishing. Day-to-day, PPS is far more than a simple cleaner — it doubles as an inspection tool that tells you whether the paint is genuinely finished after polishing, or whether you've got another correction pass coming.
Here's what plenty of people underestimate: polishing oils settle into fine scratches and holograms as you work them in, and they hide them from the eye. Wipe the surface with a cloth alone and that effect sticks around — so you think the paint is perfect. Only once PPS pulls every trace of oil off do you see the paint for what it really is. For pro detailers, that's a step you don't skip.
The Koch-Chemie PPS is built on isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and butoxyethanol — a combo that cuts through both light and more stubborn grease on paint. IPA is the industry standard for paint prep before sealants and coatings because it flashes off fast, leaves nothing behind and works broadly against non-polar stuff like waxes, silicone oils and polishing oils. The automotive-tuned formula is what makes the difference: the ingredients are matched to sensitive, high-gloss clearcoats — exactly the surfaces where too aggressive a degreaser could do microscopic damage.
For you, that means: you can use PPS straight after polishing without the alcohol base attacking freshly worked clearcoats. The alcohol is volatile, so the moment you've wiped it down the surface is ready for the next step. For the Ceramic Allround C0.02 ceramic sealant, PPS is the prep step we recommend: only on a fully grease-free surface can the ceramic polymer get maximum bite, and with it the full protection window of up to 24 months.
In pro paint correction, the inspection job of PPS matters at least as much as the degreasing. The principle: polishing oils have a filling effect — they sit in fine surface defects and make them vanish under normal light. Only once an IPA degreaser pulls those oils off completely does the clearcoat show its true state. Skip this step and you risk laying a ceramic sealant or a wax over holograms and fine scratches — the defects get sealed in and stay visible for good.
Day-to-day, you spray PPS onto the worked panel after each polishing pass and wipe it straight off with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. For the sharpest check, look the panel over under a cold light source or detailing LED right after the wipe — that's when even very fine holograms read clearly. If the panel still shows defects after the PPS check, you put in another correction pass; if it's flawless, you can go straight to the sealant.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: always grab a fresh, clean microfibre cloth for the PPS check — never the one you just polished with. Polishing-oil residue in the cloth would throw the check off. Day-to-day we'd reach for a short-pile, tightly woven microfibre polishing cloth. After the wipe, judge the panel right away under an LED hand lamp at a low angle — it shows holograms far sharper than normal room light.
The Koch-Chemie PPS isn't limited to automotive paint. The gentle formula means you can use it on every smooth surface on the vehicle: clearcoat and base coat, uncoated and coated plastic, metal (e.g. chrome, aluminium), wheel faces and glass are all fair game. For motorcycles, commercial vehicles and motorhomes the same rules apply.
One important limit: PPS is no all-purpose cleaner and no substitute for a proper pre-wash. It pulls polishing oils and light wax residue off already-cleaned surfaces — but not dried-on tar, bug splatter or brake dust. Those need their own dedicated products; only after that does PPS come in as the final degrease.
Plain isopropyl from the hardware store works for plenty of jobs — but it's often too concentrated for freshly polished, sensitive clearcoats. The Koch-Chemie PPS is built specifically for paint prep: the right concentration, maximum compatibility on clearcoat and a handy spray system for precise dosing. If you're working a high-end vehicle or degreasing after heavy machine polishing, PPS keeps you on the safer side. On top of that, PPS gives you the double duty as an inspection spray that plain hardware-store IPA doesn't. The 5-litre size is ideal for pros and workshops doing several vehicles a day.
PPS makes sense for anyone prepping paint properly and then laying a protective layer on top. If you're applying the Ceramic Allround C0.02 or any other ceramic sealant, there's no getting around PPS. The 500 ml size is ideal for the home detailer doing one or two vehicles a year; the 5-litre size pays off from three vehicles a month. Paired with the Lack-Polish violett P2.03 as your finishing polish, PPS is the link in a detailing workflow that delivers consistently top-tier results.
The Koch-Chemie PPS is a ready-to-use, alcohol-based degreaser and inspection spray for automotive paint. After polishing it strips oils, waxes and polish residue clean off the clearcoat and preps the surface for sealants, coatings or wax. At the same time it reveals holograms and scratches that polishing oils were hiding — a must-do quality check before any protective layer.
You spray PPS undiluted onto the clean, polished panel and wipe it dry straight away with a fresh, clean microfibre cloth. No dwell time needed — the alcohol base works the moment you apply it. After the wipe, check the surface under a cold light source for any leftover defects. Only once the paint is flawless do you start the sealant. The product is ready-to-use and doesn't need diluting.
Plain IPA from the hardware store works in principle, but it's often too concentrated for freshly polished clearcoats. The Koch-Chemie PPS is built specifically for paint prep: the right concentration, maximum compatibility and a handy spray system. On top of that PPS doubles as an inspection spray — something plain hardware-store IPA doesn't offer. For sensitive vehicles and after heavy machine polishing, PPS is the safer call.
PPS works on paint, plastic, metal and wheel faces. It contains no halogenated hydrocarbons and is gentle on materials. Not suitable for removing tar, bug splatter or brake dust — those are jobs for dedicated cleaners. PPS is meant purely for the final degrease after cleaning and polishing.
Yes — if you lay down a sealant or a wax even once a year, you should degrease first. PPS in the 500 ml size is ideal for one or two vehicles a year. It's simple to use and needs no prior know-how. For keen hobby detailers who polish and seal regularly, the 5-litre size is the more economical call.
