What's the difference between a lambswool pad and a foam polishing pad?
Foam pads work with even pressure and are easy to control – but with deep scratches and heavy holograms they hit their limits. Lambswool pads like the GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Cut cut more aggressively, because the natural fibres, with their three-dimensional structure, put more mechanical energy into the paint. The result: far faster removal on demanding defects – made for rotary machines that can actually deliver that power.
Heavy paint defects – deep scratches, stubborn holograms, oxidised paint or the classic cobweb effect on neglected cars – need real removal, not a half-hearted polish. The GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Cut polishing pad in grey is built for exactly these jobs: a lambswool pad for rotary work that chews through deep defects efficiently. The choice for pros who know that real correction doesn't come without real graft.
Daniel's hands-on tip: Don't start the Rotary Wool Cut at too high a speed – kick off at a medium speed (1200–1500 rpm) to work the pad in and spread the polish. At full speed without enough product you're risking uneven removal and hot spots. After the job, wash the pad out thoroughly with a pad washer or under running water and hang it up to dry – that's how the fibre structure stays intact.
Dual-action machines are the everyday tool for most detailers – safe, forgiving and, with good pads, up to medium correction too. But on heavy holograms, oxidation or deep defects in hard paint, DA machines run out of road. That's where the rotary comes in: the continuous rotation delivers more mechanical energy, and the lambswool pad transfers that energy onto the surface efficiently.
The Q²M Rotary Wool Cut in grey is the more aggressive counterpart to the white heavy-cut pad – built for control-cut jobs, where you want removal with control. For maximum removal, there's the GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Heavy Cut in white. After the correction stage with the Rotary Wool Cut, you'll usually follow up with a finishing polish on a less aggressive pad to take out the working marks completely.
Picking the right polish makes or breaks the result. With the Rotary Wool Cut you can run heavy-cutting compounds efficiently – the pad speeds up the removal and cuts down the number of passes. The polish should carry enough abrasives to work in harmony with the pad. Polishes that are too fine on an aggressive lambswool pad can lead to overheating and uneven removal.
After the correction stage, always follow up with a finishing pad and a finishing polish to fully wipe out the fine working marks left by the aggressive cutting. The goal is always a hologram- and scratch-free, deep-gloss paint that's ready for the final sealant.
Lambswool pads are an investment that pays off long-term when you look after them. After every job the pad should be cleaned thoroughly – ideally with a pad washer while you're polishing, and after the session under running water or in a bucket with pad wash. The fibres have to be cleared completely of polish residue, which otherwise clumps up and knocks the cutting power down for good.
After washing, air-dry the pad – never in the tumble dryer, since heat wrecks the fibre structure. Store it dry and dust-free, ideally in a protective sleeve. A well-kept lambswool pad can see out dozens of jobs and still deliver consistent cutting power.
The typical workflow with the Q²M Rotary Wool Cut: assess the paint, set your machine (speed, pressure, feed rate), work a test spot with the pad and a suitable compound, check the result. Only then take on the whole area. Always go panel by panel, never the whole car at once.
After the Rotary Wool Cut comes the finishing stage – here a finishing pad and a final polish do the job, taking out the working marks from the Wool Cut and bringing the paint up to a high gloss. To finish, the car should be sealed with a coating or wax. The GYEON Q²M WetCoat gives you a quick way to seal straight after the last wash.
The Q²M Rotary Wool Cut is aimed at experienced detailers and pros who work with the rotary and want a reliable, high-performance lambswool pad for correction work. For beginners and DA users we'd suggest starting out with foam pads and a DA machine first – running a rotary with wool takes experience and a feel for machine pressure and heat build-up.
If you're regularly correcting hard-worn cars – ex-fleet, lease returns or cars with neglected paint – you'll come to rate the Q²M Rotary Wool Cut as an indispensable tool in your pad line-up.
