What is the difference between a lambswool polishing pad and a foam polishing pad?
Foam pads work with even pressure and are easy to control – but they reach their limits with deep scratches and severe holograms. Lambswool polishing pads like the GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Cut cut more aggressively because the natural fibers, with their three-dimensional structure, transfer more mechanical energy to the paint surface. The result: significantly faster defect removal for challenging defects – suitable for rotary machines that can also deliver this power.
Severe paint defects – deep scratches, stubborn holograms, oxidized paint, or the proverbial spiderweb effect on neglected vehicles – require real cutting power, not half-hearted polishing. The GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Cut Polishing Pad in Gray is designed for precisely these situations: a lambswool pad for rotary operation that efficiently removes deep defects with high aggressiveness. The choice for professionals who know that true correction doesn't come without true work.
Practical tip from Daniel: Do not start the Rotary Wool Cut at too high an RPM – begin at a medium RPM (1200–1500 rpm) to break in the polishing pad and distribute the polish. At maximum RPM without sufficient polish, you risk uneven removal and hot spots. After use, thoroughly wash out the pad with a pad washer or under running water and hang it to dry – this preserves the fiber structure.
Dual-action machines are the daily tool for most detailers – safe, forgiving, and with good pads also suitable for medium corrections. However, for severe holograms, oxidation, or deep defects on hard paints, DA machines reach their limits. This is where the rotary comes into play: continuous rotation delivers more mechanical energy, and the lambswool pad efficiently transfers this energy to the surface.
The Q²M Rotary Wool Cut in Gray is the more aggressive counterpart to the white Heavy-Cut pad – designed for control-cut tasks where controlled removal is required. For maximum removal, the GYEON Q²M Rotary Wool Heavy Cut in white is available. After the correction phase with the Rotary Wool Cut, a finishing polish with a less aggressive pad typically follows to completely remove the working marks.
The choice of the right polish is crucial for the result. With the Rotary Wool Cut, highly abrasive compounds can be used efficiently – the pad accelerates the removal process and reduces the number of passes required. The polish should contain sufficient abrasives to work harmoniously with the pad. Polishes that are too fine on an aggressive lambswool pad can lead to overheating and uneven removal.
After the correction phase, always follow up with a finishing pad and a finishing polish to completely eliminate the fine working marks created by aggressive cutting. The goal is always a hologram- and scratch-free, deep-gloss paint ready for final sealing.
Lambswool pads are an investment that pays off in the long run with proper care. After each use, the pad should be thoroughly cleaned – ideally with a pad washer during polishing and after the session under running water or in a bucket with pad wash solution. The fibers must be completely freed of polish residues, which otherwise clump and permanently reduce cutting performance.
After washing, air dry the pad – never in a tumble dryer, as heat destroys the fiber structure. Store dry and dust-free, ideally in a protective cover. A well-maintained lambswool pad can withstand dozens of uses while delivering consistent cutting performance.
The typical workflow with the Q²M Rotary Wool Cut: assess paint condition, set machine settings (RPM, pressure, speed), work a test area with the pad and a suitable compound, check the result. Only then work the entire surface. Always proceed panel by panel, not the entire area at once.
After the Rotary Wool Cut, the finishing phase follows – here, a finishing pad and a final polish are suitable to eliminate the working marks of the Wool Cut and bring the paint to a high gloss. Finally, the vehicle should be sealed with a coating or wax. The GYEON Q²M WetCoat offers a quick sealing option directly after the last wash.
The Q²M Rotary Wool Cut is aimed at experienced detailers and professionals who work with rotaries and are looking for a reliable, high-performance lambswool pad for correction tasks. For beginners and DA users, we recommend starting with foam pads and a DA machine – rotary operation with lambswool requires experience and a feel for machine pressure and heat development.
Anyone who regularly corrects heavily used vehicles – from fleet vehicles, lease returns, or vehicles with neglected paint care – will appreciate the Q²M Rotary Wool Cut as an indispensable tool in their pad selection.
