FLEX DT Adapter PXE 80 — interchangeable eccentric stroke for rotary, 3mm, 6mm, and 12mm polishing characteristics
What is the FLEX DT Adapter PXE 80? The FLEX DT Adapter is the interchangeable eccentric drive of the PXE 80 12-EC polisher. It is available in four variants — DT-P (rotary), DT-XF 3 (3mm stroke), DT-XF 6 (6mm stroke), and DT-XF 12 (12mm stroke) — transforming the same polisher into four functionally different tools for finishing, hologram removal, and defect correction.
The FLEX PXE 80 12-EC is an eccentric polisher — but what "eccentric" exactly means in practice critically depends on the FLEX DT Adapter used. The eccentric stroke — the radius around which the polishing pad oscillates during operation — largely determines the aggressiveness of the machine, the polishing feel, and the achievable result. A 3mm stroke works finely and controllably; a 12mm stroke generates more movement and more cutting power. With the DT Adapter system, this variable can be freely selected and changed at any time on the PXE 80.
The principle is elegant: The FLEX DT Adapter PXE 80 is the mechanical interface between the motor shaft and the hook-and-loop backing plate connection of the PXE 80. It is not permanently installed but can be exchanged via a quick-change mechanism. Anyone who owns four DT Adapters essentially has four polishing machines in one housing — rotary for professional rotary polisher applications, 3mm for hologram-free finishing, 6mm for balanced defect correction, and 12mm for aggressive detailing with high material removal.
For professional detailing, this system is a significant advantage over conventional eccentric polishers with a fixed stroke. No need to purchase multiple machines, no different devices for different work steps — one PXE 80, four DT Adapters, four polishing characteristics. The modular system makes the FLEX PXE 80 the most versatile mini eccentric polisher in its class and is one of the main reasons why this polisher has gained such popularity in professional detailing.
- Four polishing characteristics from one machine — rotary, 3mm, 6mm, 12mm. The DT-P adapter switches the PXE 80 into rotary mode — maximum cutting, maximum heat, maximum control requirement. The DT-XF adapters (3, 6, 12mm) activate the eccentric motion with increasing radius: 3mm for finishing and hologram freedom, 6mm as an all-round stroke for defect correction and finishing in one step, 12mm for aggressive correction of deep scratches. Each variant can be changed without tools in seconds.
- Quick-change system for a smooth multi-stage process. If you keep several DT adapters ready with already mounted hook-and-loop backing plates and attached pads, you can switch between work steps in seconds — no pad removal, no plate change, no re-tensioning. Adapter out, next adapter in, continue polishing. In a multi-stage polishing process (cut → compound → finish), this system significantly saves time and reduces interruptions in the workflow.
- Compatibility with FLEX hook-and-loop backing plates and third-party backing plates. In addition to the original FLEX hook-and-loop backing plates (Ø30mm, Ø75mm), the DT-XF adapters also accommodate compatible backing plates from third-party manufacturers such as APS (Ø50mm). This expands the pad compatibility spectrum and allows the use of all common polishing pad formats on the PXE 80 — from the small Ø30mm precision disc to the Ø75mm standard polishing plate.
Practical tip from Detailing1: For the professional multi-stage process on the PXE 80, we recommend three DT-XF adapters: DT-XF 12 with a cut pad for step 1 (defect correction), DT-XF 3 with a compound pad for step 2 (refinement), and DT-XF 3 with a finish pad for step 3 (hologram-free finishing). Prepare all three in advance, lay them out on the workbench — switching between steps then takes 5 seconds instead of 2 minutes.
Eccentric stroke and drive concept — how the DT Adapter determines the polishing characteristics of the PXE 80
The core of the FLEX DT Adapter is the eccentric stroke — the offset between the motor shaft axis and the plate axis. With a 3mm DT-XF adapter, the polishing pad oscillates in a circle with a 3mm radius around the machine axis; with the 12mm adapter, it oscillates in a circle with a 12mm radius. This difference may sound small, but it has fundamental effects on the polishing characteristics.
A small eccentric stroke (3mm) generates a fast, fine-grained circular motion. Abrasion is low, heat development is low, and the risk of holograms is minimal. For finishing work and the final polishing stage, where the paint is already almost flawless and only needs to be brought to a high gloss, the 3mm stroke is the superior choice. It allows for maximum high gloss achievement with minimal risk of overworking.
A large eccentric stroke (12mm) generates a wide, slower motion. Material removal is higher, cutting is more aggressive — comparable to a machine that transfers more energy to the paint surface. For deeper scratches, oxidized paint surfaces, or vehicles that have not been detailed for a long time, the 12mm stroke is the more efficient tool. It works faster through stubborn defects but also requires more control and an experienced eye for the progress of material removal.
The 6mm stroke is the compromise between both extremes: aggressive enough for most everyday scratches and oxidation marks, yet gentle enough for manageable finishing. For detailers who want to work with one stroke adapter for everything, the DT-XF 6 is the first recommendation.
An important note for understanding: The eccentric stroke is not the only variable in polishing aggressiveness. Pad type, polish type, and machine speed also play a role. The 12mm DT-XF with a soft finish pad can remove less material than the 3mm DT-XF with an aggressive cut pad. The DT Adapter system provides an additional adjustment screw for the user — not a restriction. Anyone who understands the system can achieve an extraordinary range of results with the four adapters.
DT-P rotary vs. DT-XF — when each type of motion is the right choice
In addition to the three eccentric DT-XF variants, there is the DT-P Adapter (rotary), which transforms the PXE 80 into a rotary polisher. In rotary mode, the pad rotates exclusively around the machine axis — no eccentric oscillation, just pure rotation like a classic rotary polisher.
Rotary motion generates the highest cutting power, the highest heat development, and the most aggressive material removal. It is the preferred tool for the most stubborn deep scratches, old paints with heavily oxidized surfaces, or in professional bodywork when painting and finishing fresh paint surfaces. The disadvantage: Without eccentric motion, the risk of holograms and swirl marks increases significantly. The DT-P requires experience, control, and subsequently, a finishing step with a DT-XF adapter is essential.
The eccentric DT-XF adapters, with their combined orbital and oscillating motion, produce significantly safer results for less experienced users — and are usually the first choice in everyday detailing. The combination DT-P (first step) → DT-XF 3 (finishing) is a classic professional protocol for heavily oxidized surfaces: maximum cutting with the rotary adapter, hologram-free finish with the 3mm eccentric.
For beginners without rotary experience, we recommend initially omitting the DT-P and starting with DT-XF 6 and DT-XF 3. This combination covers 95% of all typical detailing tasks without risking rotary-induced holograms. The DT-P is an extension for advanced users, not basic equipment.
Quick change with multiple DT Adapters — the workflow advantage in the multi-step process
The true potential of the DT Adapter system only unfolds when multiple units are used. A single DT Adapter with a mounted hook-and-loop backing plate is a worthwhile investment; three or four pre-prepared adapters fundamentally transform the workflow.
The principle is simple: Each DT Adapter is permanently equipped with the matching BP-M PXE hook-and-loop backing plate and the associated polishing pad. The DT-XF 12 carries the cut pad, the DT-XF 6 the compound pad, the DT-XF 3 the finish pad. When switching between steps, only the adapter is changed — pad change, plate change, and cleaning are eliminated. What otherwise takes 2–3 minutes is done in 10 seconds.
For professional detailers who detail several vehicles daily, this time advantage multiplies significantly. Ten vehicles, three polishing steps each, two pad changes saved: 20 × 2 minutes = 40 minutes daily — through an investment in three DT Adapters and prepared setups. The DT system is therefore not just a technical feature but a tangible productivity lever.
Those who frequently switch between different vehicle areas during detailing — large side panels vs. tight details — also benefit from the fact that different DT-XF adapters can also carry different hook-and-loop backing plate sizes. The DT-XF 3 with a Ø30mm plate for detail work on doors and bumpers, the DT-XF 6 with a Ø75mm plate for the hood and roof. A quick change thus combines machine characteristics and pad size in a single action.
FLEX DT Adapter comparison — which variant is right for which requirement
The selection from the four DT Adapter variants follows clear criteria, which are based on the depth of the defect, the desired aggressiveness, and the user's working style.
The DT-XF 3 (3mm stroke, €39.27) is the first choice for finishing enthusiasts, beginners, and anyone primarily looking to maintain polished paint surfaces. Low risk of scratching, high hologram-freedom, maximum gloss with minimal removal.
The DT-XF 6 (6mm stroke, €42.84) is the all-rounder. It covers most everyday tasks — light to medium scratches, oxidation marks, working in compounds — and still delivers good finishing results. If you can only buy one adapter, choose the DT-XF 6.
The DT-XF 12 (12mm stroke, €46.41) is for more demanding corrections: deeper scratches, heavily oxidized paints, bodywork. It requires a bit more experience but delivers the highest material removal in eccentric mode.
The DT-P (rotary, €22.61) is aimed at experienced users who require rotary polishing for extreme corrections or for professional reasons. It is the most affordable model but not a beginner's tool.
Buying the FLEX DT Adapter — integration into the PXE 80 accessory system
The FLEX DT Adapter PXE 80 is the indispensable link between the PXE 80 polisher and the BP-M PXE hook-and-loop backing plate. Without a DT Adapter, no hook-and-loop backing plate; without a hook-and-loop backing plate, no polishing pad — the DT Adapter is literally the heart of the PXE 80 setup.
For a complete introduction, we recommend starting with the P-Set 12-22 Q and choosing the DT-XF 6 as the first adapter. As a second step, the DT-XF 3 for hologram-free finishing complements the setup. Those who work professionally complete the system with the DT-XF 12 for aggressive correction steps — and thus have the full multi-stage profile of the PXE 80 covered with three adapters.
In combination with the BP-M/SR D30 special adhesive plate and the FS 140 polishing cones, the DT Adapters, together with the PXE 80, form the most complete mini polishing system on the market — from large body panels to the narrowest trim lines.
