Frequently asked: “My car has fine scratches from washing, branches and wipe marks that drive me up the wall. Can I sort this myself or do I really need a workshop and a polishing machine?”
The Meguiar's ScratchX is a scratch remover built for working by hand — made to take out fine scratches, wipe marks, water spots and light paint damage without a polishing machine. The finely tuned abrasive formula works gently through the clear coat and lifts surface damage that sits in the clear coat, without digging into the layers underneath. The result: smooth, clear paint with no scratches — just an applicator and a microfibre cloth. For 20.90 EUR you get a product that belongs in every car-care kit. Most of the scratches a car picks up day-to-day sit in the clear coat — and that's exactly where ScratchX goes to work.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: Always try ScratchX on a hidden test spot first — the lower edge of a door or inside the door shut, say. That tells you whether the scratch really sits in the clear coat (it disappears as you polish) or runs down into the base coat (it stays visible even after polishing). Scratches that catch your fingernail are often too deep for hand polishing and are worth having a paint shop look at. For shallow scratches that are only there visually, ScratchX usually gets you very good to complete results.
Everyday scratches come from all over: automatic car washes, branches and hedges on narrow lanes, the wrong cleaning cloths, bird and insect mess left to bake on the paint too long, or just your sleeve as you climb in. The good news: the vast majority of these scratches sit in the clear coat — the colour underneath is untouched. And scratches that sit in the clear coat can be worked out with a polish.
The difference between a proper product like ScratchX and a no-name scratch remover is the quality of the abrasive. Coarse or uneven particles leave new, fine scratches as you polish — hairline swirls — which just move the problem around instead of fixing it. The micro-fine abrasive in ScratchX is tuned to shave off the damaged clear coat and leave an even, smooth, clear surface behind.
On dark paint — black, dark blue, dark red — this matters even more. Under light, wipe marks and hairline swirls jump out on dark colours. ScratchX polishes them away and leaves an even, mirror-like surface, without the milky haze that cheap products tend to leave.
Another plus with ScratchX is how efficient it is on small spots. Setting up a polishing machine and going through the whole routine for a single scratch or a small patch of swirls is overkill. ScratchX is the right tool for targeted spot work — quick, precise, no fuss.
Prep: clean and dry the panel thoroughly. No waxes or dressings on the surface — they get in the way of the product's cut. Best used straight after a proper hand wash or a wipe-down with quick detailer. Work in the shade or under cloud — direct sun flashes the product off too fast.
Step 1 — lay it down: put a pea-sized blob of ScratchX on a soft foam applicator or a folded microfibre cloth. Get the product straight onto the scratch or the damaged spot; don't spread it over a big area.
Step 2 — work it in: use medium to firm pressure with circular or straight passes. For scratches that run in one direction, some detailers like to polish across the scratch to level it evenly. Stick to an area about the size of your palm — don't take on too much at once. Ten to twenty seconds of active polishing per spot is usually enough.
Step 3 — wipe off and check: buff the residue off with a clean microfibre cloth and check the result under raking light or direct light. If the scratch still shows, go again. Deep scratches can take several passes. Scratches still visible after three or four passes probably run deeper than the clear coat and can't be fully sorted with a paint polish alone.
Step 4 — follow up: after a ScratchX pass the paint is left with no protection. Lay down a coat of wax, paint sealant or a ceramic coating to protect the treated spot for the long run. It makes the result last a lot longer and shields the freshly polished clear coat from the next hit.
Fine scratches and hairline swirls: the classic swirl marks from the car wash, fine marring from the wrong cloths or scratches from branches are ScratchX's home turf. These almost always sit in the clear coat and can be worked out fully with the product.
Wipe marks and holograms: these come from circular buffing with the wrong cloths or from polishes with abrasives that are too coarse. ScratchX levels them out and brings back an even, clear surface.
Water spots: chalky water spots left on the paint after it dries can often be taken out with ScratchX — especially once they've etched lightly into the clear coat and plain water or quick detailer won't shift them any more.
Light oxidation: on older cars that have sat in the sun for a long time, the clear coat can go dull and chalky — that's oxidation. ScratchX can knock back light to medium oxidation and bring some of the clear coat's smoothness back. For heavy oxidation, a stronger polish or machine work makes more sense.
Next to the Meguiar's QUIK Eraser Scratch Kit — which runs off a drill pad — ScratchX is the pure by-hand option. The QUIK Eraser suits slightly deeper scratches and larger damaged areas, where the extra friction of the machine helps. ScratchX is the quicker, more straightforward choice for smaller, surface-level damage — the first pick for anyone at home who doesn't own or doesn't want to run a polishing machine.
Against no-name products from the DIY store or discounter, ScratchX's precise abrasive gives clearly better and more repeatable results — less risk of the polish itself adding fresh scratches, a clearer finish, fewer passes needed. At 20.90 EUR ScratchX sits very well in its price bracket and delivers name-brand polish quality without the premium.
If you deal with scratches regularly, pair ScratchX with a matching Meguiar's Soft Foam Applicator Pad — the foam applicator is made for applying polishes by hand and beats a bare cloth, because it puts even pressure across a set area.
ScratchX is a superb product for scratches in the clear coat. But it has clear limits: scratches that go through the clear coat into the base coat leave a coloured line or show primer or metal. Those can't be worked out with hand polishes and need a respray or a touch-up pen. The simplest test: run a fingernail over the scratch — if the nail catches, the scratch is deeper and needs professional work.
Heavy oxidation with dull patches across the panel, deep chips from stones or car-park knocks, and larger damaged areas need stronger compounds or machine polishing. ScratchX isn't a cure-all, but it's the right tool for the most common bit of paint damage you run into day-to-day.
ScratchX is made for scratches in the clear coat — ones that sit in the transparent top layer without reaching the coloured base coat. Test: run a fingernail over the scratch — if the nail doesn't catch, the scratch is in the clear coat and ScratchX can handle it.
No — ScratchX is built for working by hand. With a foam applicator and circular passes you get very good results on fine scratches and wipe marks without a machine.
For light scratches, often one or two passes. Deeper scratches in the clear coat can need three or four. If a scratch is still clearly visible after four passes, it probably runs deeper than the clear coat.
Used correctly on a cleaned surface and with the right applicator: no. The micro-fine abrasive leaves no visible hairline swirls. The key thing: always work on a clean surface and don't drag any grit under the applicator.
Yes, it's worth it. After a ScratchX pass the clear coat has no protection. A layer of wax, paint sealant or ceramic coating protects the treated spot and makes the result last.

ScratchX is designed for clear coat scratches. Test: Run your fingernail over the scratch — if your nail doesn't catch, the scratch is in the clear coat and can be treated with ScratchX.
No — ScratchX is optimized for hand application. With a foam applicator and circular motions, you can achieve very good results on fine scratches and swirl marks even without a machine.
For light scratches, one to two passes are often sufficient. Deeper clear coat scratches may require three to four passes. Afterwards, the treated area should be sealed with wax or sealant.
When applied correctly to a clean surface with the right applicator: No. The micro-fine abrasive formula leaves no visible swirl marks.
Yes, it is recommended. After ScratchX treatment, the clear coat is without a protective layer. A layer of wax, paint sealant, or ceramic coating will permanently protect the treated area.
